It is not obvious to the amateur audience to know what makes art valuable. Art is viewed differently by every onlooking critic. The value of art is determined by varying factors and opinions.
Is the Artist charismatic?
It may seem trivial. Seemingly art is judged by who (the artist) is who created the painting, just as much as the art itself. An artist is a unique perception of personality in which followers find something exciting and interesting. Buyers of art are interested in the story behind the art too.
Does the artist have a unique character or personality? It does not necessarily mean the artist is the life of the party and outgoing. It just means they tend to have charisma and a charm to their nature.
Has the Art been in the public arena?
Market stalls in public spaces, art galleries, museums, websites, shops, and township murals displaying artists’ work. These are types of places where the art gets noticed and purchased. As the matter of fact, is that buyers visit all places and destinations to look for works of art. The artist that has maximum exposure wins fans and financial rewards for selling their original art pieces.
More opportunity to display art in a public space gives way to up-and-coming artists that are new to the field of public appreciation. Nowadays in the midst of the internet exploding in the year 2022 during a pandemic, the world is in a race to work more through the tools and connections of the internet. This is giving rise to billions of new users on the internet and a percentage of them are looking for art.
What medium is the Art painted in?
There are grades of mediums that are used in painting art. From oil paint to water, acrylic and oil pastels, or perhaps pencil, charcoal can be a medium used to paint or draw a picture. Even now in the year, 2022 digital art is emerging more. The material that the art is painted on is also important to deciding value. Is it on paper, wood, or canvas? Or something else? Like skin, tattooing is also a form of art.
The art that will endure long periods of time, would most likely be oil paint. Some of the oldest canvases painted by Ancient Egyptians were on papyrus paper and even it doesn’t sound logical but have lasted the tests of time.
Does the Art have a Frame?
Some artists make special decorative frames for their artworks. A frame can raise the value of art. One factor in valuing art is certainly the quality of the frame. Is the frame a rare wood? Was it hand-carved? The frame could be metal, sometimes the precious metal sterling silver is used to frame art. I have even seen frames carved from seashells. Porcelain was also popular in past eras
Again will it last the test of time? Is it secured enough behind the frame to be able to hang on the wall?
Frames definitely increase the value of the artwork.
Is the Art Signed?
I have been around art since a very young age. The influences from my mum Eileen K Bielenberg are of enormous value to me as a budding student of life and art. Eileen would always stipulate to sign the piece of art you are creating and give it a title and a name! And this was very valuable information to receive.
Because as it stands the Copyrights Act law established in 1968 in Australia protects works of art from being claimed or copied by other parties other than the original artist. This is crucial to sign works of art to establish authenticity and originality.
And so a signature and title of art are contributing factors to making art valuable!
Conclusion
Considering this, there are other factors that contribute to the value of art, such as the age of a piece of work. However, that is a whole topic on its own discussing antiquity.

Thank u Erica for bringing this to people’s attention but the words priceless are an old saying. That’s incorrect! as all art is worth pricing, yes all art is worth something ? so u are right with the rest of the comments, people will buy from u when they like u as a person also, they will buy from u because they really like the art u produce ? so say that it’s priceless is not true because u can put a price on everything. You see I’ve been studying the art trade for 21 years. The Americans pay big money for art because art is worth it. Erica, I think u have done well with this report. thank u all art worth something!
Thank you very much Ian for your valuable opinions. I agree all art has a value.
Kind regards

Your article is very informative. I have been aware of all 5 factors that make art valuable, but had never seen them put together like that to offer the explanation. I have always thought that the value of art was really what someone would pay for it. Once an artist began to sell, the value increased organically. So, I was thinking the value was totally subject and very flexible. Your article has given an objective side look at the value.
Thank you very much for your thoughts. That is true that some art buyers and collectors will make offers for art and this may not be what the artist is expecting. But usually, the artist will see themselves around their fellow artists and they will set their own prices to reflect their confidence. Some artists will value their art high, regardless if they have not sold a piece from their collection.
You are absolutely right; there are factors that determine the value of art like the artist, the type of material used, and the piece of art itself and what it signifies. Arts made by famous artists are a lot more valuable than those made by unrecognizable names. You made a very good point about how the age of a piece of art also affects its value.
But I must say that there have been instances when artworks made by aspiring artists seem to be better in terms of quality and style. Yet, those created by well-known artists that look ordinary are valued at a higher price. I guess it all depends on what kind of art one is looking for huh?
As the famous quote says, “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.” ☺
By the way, I wonder if you ship overseas.
Hello Alice,
Thanks so much for your comments here I appreciate it. Yes, it is true some art is priced because of the popularity of the Artist. And it does depend on what type of art too, it can vary from techniques as well.
You are right “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. What someone pays for art is a very personal view.
Yes thanks for asking I am in Australia and I do ship overseas!
Your essay provides a lot of useful information. While I was aware of each of the five components that contribute to the value of art, I had never before seen them arranged in such a way as to provide an explanation. I have always believed that the true measure of an artwork’s worth is the price that someone is willing to pay for it. As an artist started making sales, their worth naturally climbed over time. Thus, I was of the opinion that the worth was wholly debatable and very malleable. Your paper has presented a balanced and impartial perspective on the value.
Hello Pasindu,
I really appreciate your thoughts and comments on my essay, thanks.
I do believe that once Art is sold it does yes get noticed more and it becomes easier sometimes to sell, but there are all the other factors that I mentioned that help sell art too.
All the best
